It is often an accumulation of life choices that lead to illness. What foods do you choose to put in your mouth? What beverages do you like to drink? How much sleep do you get per night? How active are you each day?
Let’s take a look at a heart attack. It’s one of the leading causes of death in this country. When it occurs, it can be instantly fatal for a portion of the people who have it. But it’s not an immediate thing. There have been things going on in the background that lead up to it. Perhaps there was always an undercurrent of stress throughout the person’s life. But part of one’s body can also play a part. Like one’s spine, for example.

When your body is at its optimal function, all the nerves in your nervous system are all communicating properly with each other. When something happens, like a pinched nerve, that stops the vitality of that nervous system and allows illness and disease to creep in. It happens when there’s too much pressure from a surrounding bone, cartilage, tendon, or muscle and it may or may not cause pain in that area. Many parts of your body can have a pinched nerve - your arm, your leg… though the initial spot may not be what you think. A pinched nerve in the wrist affects the hand, for example.
A chiropractor will examine you and determine where the pinched nerve is. Then they will work to reduce the pressure on that nerve, if possible through chiropractic adjustments. The chiropractic adjustments are safe and are effective. People often seek help with a chiropractor rather than going the conventional medical route.
This can drastically alter your sleep patterns. Even with medication, sometimes it leaves you wanting to just stay in a dark room for a day or two. Pinpointing what triggers these - a particular food, stress, or something else - can be very difficult. If there is an underlying stressor, then that can also wind up adversely affecting your overall health.
The good news is that a chiropractor can help you by doing spinal corrections that wind up giving you your full spinal function back. This will also help you overall with any stress on your nervous system. They can see what you are eating and give you replacement foods for those that might be causing the headaches. Sometimes it’s your posture that is causing the problem - so they will show you exercises to do to improve that.
While there are certain things that can lead to weak immune system - like when you are recovering from chemotherapy for a cancer treatment, there are other situations that can cause your immune system to be far from robust. Things like subluxations of your spine. Those will keep your neurons from properly firing and the overall immune response is not adequate. Thus you may be susceptible to a variety of diseases- especially since the endocrine system is affected by changes to the nervous system.
A chiropractor is trained to spot these subluxations and then correct them via an adjustment. Your white blood cell count can rise by a good amount after an adjustment to a subluxated area. HIV patients have had excellent results after receiving chiropractic care - research shows their T cells increase by a significant margin.
There are several other things that a chiropractor can help for the overall immune response, including flexibility, which can aid your mobility -and thus your activity levels - as you get older, fibromyalgia, and just overall tension levels throughout your body.
One thing to keep in mind is that while having a fully functioning nervous system thanks to chiropractic care is wonderful, it is not a protective shield that will negate any other lifestyle choices that you make. You still need to exercise, sleep well, and eat properly. All of those things working together in harmony can give you a boost - but there are a lot of variables out there - including one’s genetic makeup - that contribute to the length of a life.
